May 10, 2023

The negative effects of cannabis on our youth can be devastating, and it's important to understand the risks.

The event "Cannabis Awareness: An informative evening" was held at the SCPD Academy on the Suffolk County Community Campus. The event was held to inform the community about the negative and potentially devastating effects of cannabis on children, adolescents, and young adults. Unfortunately, if you were not able to attend, there are still ways to learn more about the topic. You can contact John Venza, LCSW-R, LMHC, and Vice President of Adolescent & Residential Services in NYC & LI at 631-521-8400, ext 5121, or JohnmVenza@opiny.org.

The event recognized the efforts of Longwood High School senior Grace Sutherland, class of 2023, for her outstanding advocacy for legislation to eliminate cannabis marketing practices that target the youth population. SCPD Commissioner Rodney Harrison praised Sutherland for her advocacy work and acknowledged her contributions to the community.

The negative effects of cannabis on youth can be devastating, and it's important to understand the risks associated with its use. Cannabis can impair brain development and lead to memory and learning problems, impaired judgment, and increased risk of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Additionally, cannabis use can lead to addiction, which can have a profound impact on an individual's life and the lives of their loved ones.

Events like "Cannabis Awareness" are crucial in educating the community about the risks associated with cannabis use and the importance of advocating for policies that protect our youth from harmful marketing practices. It is essential to continue these conversations and work together to create a safer and healthier community for our children, adolescents, and young adults.
