October Hike: Sailors Haven - Sunken Forest

We will be on the Island for ~ 4 hours. We'll leisurely hike the Sunken Forest Trail Loop. We'll stop for lunch after completing the loop. After completing the loop we'll take ~ 1 hour for lunch and snacks, so pack your favorite picnic lunch. If time allows we'll work off lunch with a walk towards Cherry Grove and back.  As we've done before, we'll adjust the plan as the group feels best.  Ferry Back to Sayville leaves Sailors Haven at 3:00PM This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is beautiful to visit anytime. You'll need to leave pups at home — dogs aren't allowed on this trail. Amenities

As you step off the boat, visitors are greeted to the National Seashore visitor center, snack bar, and gift shop. The beach is a short distance away, along the main boardwalk, which is bordered on the west by the Sunken Forest.

The ancient history of Fire Island is alive at the Sunken Forrest, an enchanted 300-year-old primeval holly forest, which is the only one of its kind on the East Coast. Under the diverse canopy of leaves, a 1.5 mile boardwalk meanders through freshwater bogs filled with a variety of trees and shrubs. The maritime forest with its American holly and catbrier make for a pristine walk from the bay to the ocean.
